A Kitchen Designed Around the Way You Live

The kitchen is often one of the hardest-working spaces in a home. It needs to look right, but it also needs to flow properly, provide enough storage, support the way you cook and work with the rest of the property.

At Calico, we approach kitchen renovation as a complete project rather than simply replacing cabinets and worktops.

We consider the layout, services, lighting, storage, finishes and building work together so the finished kitchen feels like it was designed for your home rather than simply fitted into it.

Flooring is part of that wider picture too. The subfloor, finished floor height, kitchen units, appliances, thresholds and any underfloor heating all need to work together if the room is going to be finished properly.

Kitchen Reconfiguration

Sometimes a better kitchen starts by reconsidering the layout, moving services or changing how the room connects with the surrounding property.

Bespoke kitchen cabinetry

Bespoke Kitchen Features

Drawing on our carpentry background, we can incorporate bespoke storage, cabinetry and tailored features where an off-the-shelf solution does not make the best use of the space.

Kitchen modernisation

Kitchen Modernisation

Bring an outdated kitchen up to date with improvements to cabinetry, surfaces, lighting, electrics, plumbing and the overall appearance of the room.

Kitchen extension and renovation

Kitchens Within Extensions

If your kitchen forms part of a wider extension or renovation, we can consider the kitchen as part of the complete building project rather than as a separate installation.

Your Kitchen. Your Choice.

Kitchens From Leading Suppliers

You don't have to purchase your kitchen from us for Calico to complete the project. We can install kitchens supplied by a wide range of manufacturers and retailers, including Wickes, Magnet, Howdens, B&Q, Symphony and Euphoria, as well as kitchens from many other suppliers.

WickesMagnetHowdensB&QSymphonyEuphoriaOther Suppliers

Whether you have already ordered your kitchen, are currently comparing suppliers or have only just started exploring the options, we can discuss the wider installation requirements with you.

Because we are not limited to fitting one particular kitchen manufacturer, the focus can remain on what works best for your property, your preferred kitchen and your budget.

We can also coordinate the associated carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, plastering, flooring, decorating and building alterations required to turn the supplied kitchen into a properly finished room. Where flooring forms part of the project, we can also consider the preparation required beneath it rather than simply treating the final covering as a separate finishing job.

One Team. One Kitchen.

More Than Simply Fitting Cabinets

A complete kitchen renovation can involve carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, plastering, decorating, flooring, subfloor preparation and building alterations.

Calico coordinates those different elements as one project, helping to make sure each stage is carried out in the right sequence.

Instead of trying to organise several separate contractors, you have one team looking at the finished kitchen as a whole.

Thinking Beyond the Cabinets

A Kitchen Has to Work as Good as It Looks

Choosing door colours and worktops is only part of creating a successful kitchen. The way the room is planned can have a much greater impact on everyday life.

Layout

Is there a better way for preparation, cooking and storage areas to work together?

Storage

Thoughtful storage can make better use of corners, height and awkward spaces.

Lighting

Task, feature and general lighting all play different roles in a kitchen.

Power

Sockets and electrical supplies should be planned around how the finished kitchen will be used.

Plumbing

Moving appliances, sinks or services can sometimes unlock a much better layout.

Flow

We consider how the kitchen connects with dining, living and external areas.

Flooring & Floor Levels

The subfloor, final floor covering, thresholds and appliance clearances should be considered before the kitchen is installed.

Kitchen Flooring Needs to Be Planned With the Kitchen

Kitchen flooring is not just a final decorative choice. The surface beneath it, the finished floor height and the way the floor meets cabinets, appliances, doors and adjoining rooms can all affect the finished result.

If the existing kitchen is being stripped back, it is often the right time to assess the subfloor properly. Depending on the property and the floor covering being installed, preparation may include repairs, securing loose timber, suitable overlay boards, concrete or screed preparation, or levelling where appropriate.

Flooring options for kitchens can include:

  • Engineered or other suitable timber flooring
  • Click LVT
  • Glue-down LVT
  • Vinyl and lino
  • Ceramic and porcelain floor tiles
  • Other suitable finishes depending on the room and subfloor

Glue-down LVT and tiled floors are especially dependent on good preparation, while floating and timber floors still need a stable, appropriate base. Finished levels should also be considered where the kitchen opens into a dining room, extension or other adjoining space.

Where underfloor heating is being used, the heating system, floor build-up and chosen covering should be considered together so the final flooring is suitable for the system.

Our Approach

From Initial Ideas to Finished Kitchen

We look at your existing kitchen, how you use the space and what you would like to improve before deciding how the renovation should move forward.

01

Understand

We discuss how you use the kitchen, what frustrates you about the current room and what you would like the new space to achieve.

02

Explore & Plan

We consider layout, services, building alterations, existing floor construction, finished floor levels and the different options available before agreeing the way forward.

03

Prepare

The existing kitchen is removed and any required building, electrical, plumbing, subfloor and preparation work is carried out.

04

Install & Finish

The new kitchen is installed and brought together with the flooring, trims and finishing details that turn it into a completed room.

Transformation

See What a Kitchen Renovation Can Achieve

Kitchen renovation can completely change not just the appearance of a room, but the way a home feels and functions.

The Details Matter

Built Around the Finished Result

A successful kitchen is the result of many smaller details being considered together.

Carpentry Experience Our background in carpentry gives us a strong understanding of cabinetry, fitting, detailing and making the most of available space.
Proper Preparation Walls, floors and services need to be ready before the finished kitchen is installed.
Subfloor Preparation Timber, chipboard, concrete or screeded floors may need different preparation before the chosen finished flooring is installed. Explore Flooring Services →
Finished Floor Levels Floor build-up affects thresholds, doors, plinths, appliances and how the kitchen meets adjoining rooms, so it should be considered early.
Flooring & Underfloor Heating Where underfloor heating is installed, the final floor covering and complete build-up need to be appropriate for the heating system. Explore Heating Systems →
Electrical Planning Lighting, sockets and appliance supplies are considered alongside the finished layout.
Plumbing Coordination Sink, dishwasher, washing machine and other services can be considered as part of the overall layout.
Finishing Details Trims, junctions, alignment and finishing work make a significant difference to how the final kitchen feels.
One Complete Space We look beyond individual units and consider how the kitchen works with the rest of your home.
Finished kitchen craftsmanship by Calico
Why Calico?

Carpentry Is Where Our Story Started

Calico began with carpentry, so kitchens sit naturally within the way we think about craftsmanship and detail.

But today's kitchen projects often involve much more than cabinetry. Our wider building capability means we can look at walls, services, lighting, flooring, the subfloor beneath it and the surrounding space rather than treating the kitchen as an isolated fit-out.

We want you to understand the options available so the finished kitchen is the best solution for your home, not simply the easiest solution for us to install.

Questions & Answers

Kitchen Renovation FAQs

Can Calico manage my entire kitchen renovation?

Yes. We can coordinate the building, carpentry, plumbing, electrical and finishing work involved in a complete kitchen renovation, giving you one team looking at the overall project.

Can you fit a kitchen I have bought from another supplier?

Yes. Calico can install kitchens supplied by a wide range of manufacturers and retailers, including Wickes, Magnet, Howdens, B&Q, Symphony and Euphoria, as well as kitchens from many other suppliers. If you already have a kitchen on order, talk to us about the installation and any associated building, carpentry, plumbing, electrical or finishing work required.

Do I have to buy the kitchen through Calico?

No. We are happy to discuss installing a kitchen you have sourced yourself. This also means you are free to compare different manufacturers, styles and budgets rather than being restricted to one particular kitchen range.

Can you change the layout of my kitchen?

In many cases, yes. A different kitchen layout may involve relocating plumbing, electrical supplies, appliances or even altering walls and openings, so we assess the options before recommending the best approach.

Can you create an open-plan kitchen?

Potentially. Opening a kitchen into another room may involve structural alterations and appropriate design or structural input depending on the property. We can assess what is practical for your home.

Do you carry out the electrical and plumbing work too?

We can coordinate the plumbing, electrical and other specialist trades required so they form part of the overall kitchen project rather than leaving you to arrange each stage independently.

Can you incorporate bespoke cabinetry or storage?

Yes. With Calico's background in carpentry, bespoke storage and tailored cabinetry can be considered where they provide a better solution than standard components.

Can you install the kitchen flooring too?

Yes. Flooring can be planned as part of the complete kitchen renovation, including suitable timber flooring, vinyl, lino, click LVT, glue-down LVT and tiled floors depending on the room, product and subfloor.

Visit our Flooring Services page for more information.

Do you prepare the subfloor before laying kitchen flooring?

Yes, where required. The preparation depends on whether the existing floor is timber, chipboard, plywood, concrete, screed or another construction, and on the flooring being installed above it.

Preparation may include repairs, securing loose areas, suitable overlay boards or levelling where appropriate.

Should the flooring go under the kitchen units?

That depends on the flooring system, kitchen design and manufacturer's installation requirements. Floating floors, glue-down floors and tiled floors can have different requirements, so the floor and kitchen layout should be considered together before installation begins.

Can kitchen flooring be used with underfloor heating?

Many flooring products can be compatible with underfloor heating, but the selected floor covering, adhesive or underlay and installation method need to be suitable for the specific heating system and manufacturer's guidance.

See our Heating Systems page and Flooring Services page for more information.

How long does a kitchen renovation take?

Timescales vary depending on the size of the kitchen, the amount of structural or service alteration required and the specification of the finished room. We can discuss a likely programme once the scope of work is understood.
